Socks for Veronik
Pattern: Socks for Veronik, from the Interweave Knits Holiday ‘07 issue
Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock, color Firefly
These socks certainly brighten up the dreary days around here! We don’t really get much of a winter in Houston, but the city is trying it’s best with two solid weeks of grey and drizzle. I don’t mind the gloomy weather, it gives me the rare opportunity to get some wear out of all my handknits.
Lest you think I’m always lounging about in pointy shoes and handknit socks…
The reality is that I’m working from home in my pj’s. I do like the blue, white, and yellow combo, though!
These are my first continental project and they turned out pretty well! The sole of the sock has some tension issues, but those will probably even out with wear. I followed the pattern exactly which gives you a fairly long leg in the sock. If I were to knit these again, I’d shorten them by a pattern repeat or two. The small garter edge looks pretty, but doesn’t do much to hold up the sock when faced with my generously sized calves.
This is my first time working with Lorna’s Laces for a whole project – I’ve swatched a variegated colorway of the Shepherd Sock and swapped it away because it pooled so badly. Yellow’s never my first choice, colorwise, but I’ve warmed up to it quite a bit. The yarn itself was wonderful to work with and I’d definitely use it again. I wish I could buy the semisolid colorways locally.
I realized recently that I have exactly 12 skeins of sock yarn in my stash. If I knit a sock a month, I’ll be sock yarn stashless by the end of the year, and that sounds fabulous to me.
I’m getting a jump on February’s pair – a Child’s First Sock in some Yarn Botanika merino/tencel yarn. I’ve loved this pattern since forever and I’m excited to knit these up! Shhhh, don’t tell my unfinished objects about this one.
Rob and I are going to visit the family this weekend, so this will be the perfect travel project. I’m rushing to finish the Tangled Yoke today – it’s very close to completion, and I’m determined to get some wear out of it!

Ooh, I really like that pattern in the yellow…and that’s a really nice yellow, too! Beautiful socks!
Sock yarn stash-less. That’s simply amazing. I’ve been reorging the stash recently and been completely amazed at the amount of sock yarn. I guess it’s not all that surprising since I don’t knit many socks. I’m in complete awe of your simple 12 skeins!
Oh! Oh! Oh! These are SO beautiful, I love them! And beautiful photos too, as always. :-)
Hey! I have those same pajama pants!
The socks are beautiful, too. :)
Those are beautiful. I added them to my queue…..Not bad! I think we could both be sock yarn-less by the end of the year (if I didn’t buy any in MD!) I do have a similar goal to knit all from stash though. Need to get moving!
Merino/tencel is the best…no pilling!
Your yellow socks are so beautiful! The yellow seems like a perfect yellow. I also love how the Child’s First Sock are coming out.
Nice yellow socks!! And a pair of socks a month, huh? That sounds like a pretty decent pledge for 2008. Want some company?
Awww, I really like the cat picture! Beautiful socks, and your sock in progress looks awesome, too!
beautiful socks! i love the color. and your new february socks are awesome, too! purple, i’m not surprised :D
Love them! The color is amazing and I’m also a fan of the blue/yellow combo.
Good luck with the TY, both your socks are so vibrant and lovely!
Yay for purdy socks!
Wow, I am not a yellow fan either, but those are SO pretty! white, blue, yellow, and cat go together so well.
And a sock-a-month marathon sounds like such a good plan! I somehow have no sock yarn at all (which actually isn’t surprising since I have never successfully finished socks. there are a few in my ravelry queue, I have these wild notions of knitting socks with noro kureyon sock yarn….) so if you get tired of your monthly sock grind, I’ll take leftovers! :)
Gorgeous!
And I’m excited to know I’ve got 12 more pairs to look forward to seeing…
And as for that middle shot, in the PJs? I’m not convinced. I still think that all you do is lounge about in socks and pointy shoes…. :)
Isn’t that funny, you know, I would never have thought to knit a pair of yellow socks, but aren’t those just gorgeous!? I love your idea of knitting a pair of socks a month to elimanate the sock yarn stash – unfortunately, I’ll have to knit 2 pair a month, but that’s doable – maybe.
The socks are beautiful! So are your next pair.
I love these!! I have been planning to knit these with a semi-solid skein of STR in a slightly darker yellow color.
Pretty socks!…and I don’t even like yellow.
“Sock yarn stashless”? The very idea is enough to give me an anxiety attack.
Wow, these came out beautifully! I love that they are nice and tall, too. Nice job!
The socks are gorgeous! It’s gonna be amazing to see the socks you make out of those 12 skeins. :)
Those are some awesome socks! Sadly, I could never wear the pointy shoes, though I think they’re cute. Socks and PJs are great, though.
I took at look at your Flickr photos on the Tangled Yoke Cardigan. I just finished one of these and debated long and hard about a ribbon to stabilize the button band, but my sewing skills with buttonholes (and my mastery of the machine) are a litte iffy, so I backed out. I’d love to hear if you have any tips on this part, when you get there. I suppose I could still add them, if I dared.
And I love the socks–very nicely done.
Pretty! Both pairs look so nice. I’ve been thinking about the child’s first sock myself, and love them in the purple.
Those socks are really cute!
I love that ‘Put the camera down’ look you’re getting there.
ohhh I am loving the blue yellow white combo too. And MAN those PJs look comfy. Such wonderful color choices!
Beautiful socks, and an even more beautiful photo with the cat!
Gorgeous socks – I love that yellow! I’m so enjoying our “winter” at the moment… all the handknit sweaters are being worn!
They brightened my day with the great colours those socks! fab!
omg these are beautiful! i love the pattern and the colour is absolutely perfect. hurrah!
They look great in shoes!!!
I’m working from homne in my PJs today too!
Nice socks.
i don’t know what i like more: the lovely socks or the way you presented them: very nice sock-styling!!!
I think those socks are truly perfect, being yellow! Great job.
Only 12? wow! If you run short, please come raid my stash of over 100 skeins of sock yarn. Living in Houston doesn’t demand that number of wool socks! :)

Very pretty! I like yours better than the magazine photo. Such a pretty, cheerful yellow too. Also like the new socks for February. You have a great idea with the pair a month. I’d like to do that too, but I’ll still have sock yarn stash by year’s end. Must go knit on socks!
BTW–I’ve found the same thing with a garter edges on socks. At least I know it’s not just me.
Pretty yellow socks! I’ll have to look for the child’s 1st sock pattern.
What gauge do you do you usually get with your sock yarn? Did you have to compensate for it when you knitted the Veronik?
Goodness I love those yellow lacey socks. How could you not look down at your feet and think of Spring. I am anxious to see that first child’s sock knit up. What size needles are you using?
I love these to an unreasonable degree. I liked the pattern, but I heart is in yellow. Love. Love! LOVE!
Nice Socks!
Beautiful! Why o why didn’t I buy the holiday issue…
Love the image with cat, BTW!
Beautiful! I have to say that I hadn’t really given the socks a second look in the Holiday issue, but in this color, they are amazing (and now must be added to my knit list).
So pretty! I was just admiring this pattern last night as I leafed through the magazine.
I must say I am a sucker for that blue and yellow combo too! It must be my Swedish roots.
Just wanted to let you know, you make my day!
those socks are divine. lace+socks isn’t my favorite combo in the world ever but i love the pattern for these socks! and the yellow yarn is perfection.
