Ugly WIPs

Hi! It’s been a week, and I’ve got nothing to show except for some photos of squished up knitting.

Will you trust me that this sock looks 100% better when blocked and stretched out on one’s foot? Thanks. I’m almost done with sock #1, which will give me about two weeks to knit the other sock and do some serious blocking. I think we’re in good shape here, especially since a certain Petal is in Time Out.

Petal is thisclose to becoming a sweater. I don’t seem to own a size 1 circular needle, so I had to chain a number of straight needles to knit the edging ribbing, which is extremely annoying. I finished the ribbing and seamed the sides and one sleeve yesterday, and the result was not so good. The body fit great, the neckline not so much. I dropped the neckline about an inch, because I thought it hit in a bad location on the modeled photo, but that causes my bra straps to show in the corners where the upper triangles hit the lower neckline. So now I’m going to frog back the lower neckline and reknit to pattern and really, really hope that I don’t have to frog the upper ribbing to reknit the triangles. Fingers crossed!

Then there’s the question of crocheting some buttonholes for the glass buttons that came with the kit. I’m considering reusing the buttons for a different, handwash-only, project after reading this:

Oh, come on.

Oh, girl! I would totally consider subbing some washable buttons, too. That’s crazy-talk, removing buttons, washing, and then re-attaching the buttons. Sheesh!

Oh my gosh, I love that blue sock! Is that for sockapalooza? if so, I’m in the same place you are haha…we’ll get it done, but I definetly procrastinated! =)

Seriously, do people actually clip buttons off before washing and sew them back on after? I sure don’t.

I believe you about the sock. What an interesting stitch pattern.

Wow, that sock is gorgeous! I love the stitch pattern so much, not to mention the color.

Are you kidding me? that sock is gorgeous as-is!

Re: the buttons, well, I commented on Flickr, but: teh suck. Honestly, I’d probably just use them anyway and maybe put the sweater in a lingerie bag or something in the washer.

I think the sock looks really pretty already– it must be gorgeous when it’s stretched out!

I wonder if anyone has actually followed those button directions….

Dude! Do people really take off their buttons and resew them on?!?!?! Can’t even imagine.

you know… I just bought some little vintage mother of pearl buttons that could probably be washed… want to take a look at them as a possible sub?

Lovely sock pattern, is it your own? Fingers crossed that petal will be all fine, and I’d wash the bottons and then replace them when they crack!

Yeah, that washing the buttons thing? Doubtful, very doubtful…and your wips are not ugly at all, the blue sock is especially cool.

I love the yarn colors you’re using. The knitting looks great!

  13. Kirsten - July 18th, 2007 @4:36 pm

That sock is gorgeous!! Not at all ugly!
Yup, I’d rethink using those buttons too!

  14. micki - July 18th, 2007 @4:42 pm

Your sock is not looking ugly at all!

Those buttons remind me of an awful dress I once saw with a care label that read, “Do not machine wash or hand wash. This garment cannot be cleaned successfully.”

  15. Liz - July 18th, 2007 @5:48 pm

Ok, Micki’s comment above cracked me up. My guess is that they’re worried the buttons will shatter when they get tossed around in the washing machine, but if you have a nice and gentle one you should be ok. Also, that sock looks really cool. You’ll have to give us a modeled shot to prove that it can actually look better.

I think the sock is lovely! (and it’s definitely a good idea to switch out the buttons if you plan to machine wash)

Having to echo everyone else: What a great looking sock!!

  18. stacey - July 19th, 2007 @8:06 am

what the heck is the point of that? why have buttons if you have to attach then detach them for washing???? i’d be swapping those out pretty quick.

the sock - it is BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  19. Julia - July 19th, 2007 @11:06 am

I looked all over that post and couldn’t find anything ugly - I have no idea what you’re talking about, both those WIPS are gorgeous. Glass buttons? Hmmm, I don’t take buttons off anything before washing it. WTF?

Sometimes Ms. Hargreaves is cuh-RAZY. Totally swap those damn buttons out.

(I actually like the sock a lot, just as-is. The color is so happy!)

  21. Meredith - July 22nd, 2007 @8:29 pm

    Ugly?!?! Everything looks fabulous!

  22. Lindsey - July 22nd, 2007 @11:15 pm

Maybe its just me, but wouldn’t needing to remove the buttons before macine washing make it, um, I dunno, non-machine washable? I would totally swap them out!
