How I know my shawl is dry
The thing still bleeds like crazy, but I’ve officially given up! A gentile squeeze in the bath spreads pink dye everywhere, like an octopus ejecting ink into water. I called the ladies at Tess and they were very nice about it, suggesting dish soap (no change) and offering to send a new skein to me. I’ve now learned my lesson about the crazy reds.
I’ll be gifting this with a big caveat about the bleeding and an offer to knit another shawl in exchange. I guess this gives me an excuse to knit more lace this summer!

Wow!! That’s just incredible! Craziness!!!
eeesh. I can’t believe it bleed so much. But you know, my Somewhat Cowl *still* bleeds pink every time I wash it. Perhaps it’s just the fate of saturated reds…
this is STILL such a beautiful shawl! :)
It is still gorgeous, despite the bleeding!
I love your instrument for measuring shawl dryness!
I hope the nice ladies are sending you a different color this time. . . perhaps a nice green?
Wow, I agree with the other posters who note that it’s still unbelievably beautiful!
Aww, how cute! Sorry that you weren’t able to resolve your problem :( The shawl still looks great, though! I’m sure it will be worth wearing :)
Well, it’s awfully pretty even if it bleeds, but there has got to be some product that will set that dye. You might need to change the molecular structure of the dye like by freezing it or something. I don’t know that that would work. Maybe you need a stronger vinegar - like for pickling which is about 9%. Still, it’s perdy.
More lace, I says! Despite the bleeding problems that shawl looks gorgeous. And what better to knit in Summer than lace? :)
reds are soooo hard to set. watch out for turquoise too.
it’s a gorgeous shawl, and great color for you (and kitty):).
Well, it is a very lovely shawl. Glad the cat likes it!
What a beutiful picture of your cat AND the shawl! I had sock yarn from sweetgeorgia a while back, which never stopped bleeding, no matter what I did. By now, they are worn down and look like road kill (the color was coffee beans) and have a hole in the heel. Anyway, as long as the person who will wear the shawl stays away from water she will be fine! ;o)
that is too bad….did it bleed on kitty? :) hopefully she can wear it with darker colors or bare skin and not be too worried!
Soooo pretty (the shawl AND the cat!) . . . have you tried Retayne? My mom uses it for quilt fabric, and reports good success. If you can’t find any near you, let me know and I can send you some (I have a bottle I’ve never used).
so pretty though! but more lace is always good, right?
Beautiful shawl! Cute cat too - looks like one of mine ;)
It looks lovely. I just remembered something else though–sometimes the local water has something to do with how much something bleeds. So you can go visit her and re-block it there? Ha!
It really is beautiful — just not in the rain. :)
hear hear…or is it here here?
anyway, i agree with the other commenters– this shawl is very very beautiful! just remind her not to wear it in the rain! :o) and that is such a nice gesture–to offer to knit her another one. sounds like a win-win deal to me! :o)
and Silver is SO CUTE!
snuggles to the kitties!
The shawl looks great! The color is still so deep, it’s hard to believe the yarn hemorrhaged so much dye.
Kitties and knitting…there is no better combination. Despite the bleeding it looks wonderful. Hopefully the next free skein will keep it’s color a little better
This site seems to have a lot of chemical options…http://www.dharmatrading.com/other_ingredients.html. Such a pity about the bleeding ’cause it’s so gorgeous! You know, if the wearer can’t get wear out of it because of the bleeding, it would look good on the wall–framed or hung on a canvas backing or something? It’s too pretty to be stowed away
Oh, what a great shot. Love it. And I’ve already seen the fabulousness that is your shawl on Flickr. And, well, it is FABULOUSNESS. Gorgeous.
It’s an adorable shawl and your kittie is such a cutie! Mine as well fancy to sleep on fresh washed or ironed things :P
