Looking ahead

Whoo, I didn’t mean to be so Debbie Downer in the last post. Looking ahead, things are much greener and happier!

Sockpalooza

You know, knitting from stash isn’t so bad when your stash ROCKS! Rock on, little yarnys! I’m trying to decide on what yarn to use for my Sockpalooza socks, and I’m working my gemini indecisiveness to the max here. Top to bottom: Spirit Trail sock yarn, Yarn Pirate BFL in Merlot, and Brooks Farm Acero. I had originally purchased the Spirit Trail yarn for my sockpal, but I can see from her blog that she digs brights, so the Yarn Pirate might be a better choice. I plan designing something textured for these socks, where designing means pulling a stitch pattern from a book and knitting it in the round. I see lots of swatching in my future.

Speaking of swatches, I was looking for a flickr group to display all of my swatchy madness, and I couldn’t find one. Well, now there is. Show off your 4×4 inch squares of love!

Petal

So Petal has these beads. Lots of beads. I’m not much of an everyday bead wearer, so I’m going to replace them with purl stitches. However, the bead stitch in pattern takes up two stitches, and the purl bumps only take up one, so I have to regigger the chart a bit to make things line up correctly. The swatch has a sparser pattern at the top (one stitch wider than the original chart), and denser (one stitch smaller than the original) at the bottom. I think I like the sparser patterning better. I’m all ready to start the sweater - I decided to hold off until the big birthday since this is a gift from me to me. My 20’s are gone as of today, I bid them a fond farewell!

Garnstudio baby jacket

So. cute. I even love the waste yarn color with the greens, so I plan on buying sky blue buttons for the sweater. And also for Saarjte’s Booties, which are next on the list.

Ugh, have you seen that Destash has closed in the bitchiest way ever - no warning, no discussion about having someone else maintain it, all user info is deleted, nothing? So, so lame. I see that someone’s registered a new Destash on wordpress, hopefully this really useful resource can continue to exist.

i love love love that garnstudio baby jacket. i bookmarked awhile ago but never settled on a yarn. What weight of the cashsoft did you use - was it just the baby or aran?

I think the Yarn Pirate yarn is a good choice for SockPal socks!

That’s a great idea to sub purl stitches for beads. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

I read today that Ravelry is hoping to fill the Destash gap. That will probably be a nice alternative since everyone has their stash cataloged there anyway!

happy birthday! hope you have a great one. :)

ahh, if she likes brights, then yes! YP! They’re all gorgeous, though.

The DeStash thing is a little weird — they initially didn’t remove the users information, so the 3+ sites who set up NEW DeStash sites stole the info any everyone who was on the list got an email from the sites… which everyone was getting annoyed with. So the original Destash folk got a bunch of pissy emails from people (”why did you give out my information!”)… and summarily deleted the information. Nevermind that it’s all archived on the wayback machine anyway.

It needed to move off of frustrating-and-not-built-for-heavy-use blogger, so we’ll see what happens, especially with Ravelry building a destash thing into it all.

yeah, i’m waiting for the ravelry site to get up and running and see how that works out.
i agree w/jess–the destash thing is definitely wierd.
anyhoooo, that baby sweater looks really cute! and sophisticated too! can’t wait to see it with the buttons!!!
and i definitely like the purl bumps on the swatch. in general, i like a purl bump here and there in my stockinette. it breaks up the monotony.
    have a great weekend! :o)

    Happy birthday Kelly!

That Yarn Pirate yarn would be a great choice, although the Spirit Trail yarn doesn’t look half bad.

The garnstudio baby sweater turned out so well! Go yarnys! Good call on the gemini indecisiveness. I’m a gemini as well and I went through all 650+ sock patterns on Ravelry to see what would work best for my sockapalooza pal. And ended up going with my first choice anyway. Trust your gut instinct.
    happy birthday!

Happy birthday! It sounds like you have a healthy attitude toward turning 30. I didn’t freak out about it either. Age is just a number.

That baby sweater is so cute it almost makes me want to flush my BCPs.

Happy, happy birthday! I’m anxious to see how Petal turns out–that is such a beautiful pattern. Good gift!

Happy Birthday!!!!!! I hope it was amazing!!
That Garnstudio jacket is gorgeous! I think I’d like an adult sized version. I agree that the light blue looks great with the greens. It should be cute with blue buttons.

Love the Garnstudio sweater. I also think the top part of the Petal swatch looks the best. can’t wait to see the WIP pics.

yeah the Destash thing was on the bitchy side, but these things often put people over the edge if they are not prepared. I was a little surprised to see my e-mail lumped with a gazillion others when they sent their very curt announcement of closure. BCC people BCC makes problems like the pissy e-mails they received go away. Oh well, live and learn

The baby sweater is SO cute! And a big happy birthday!

    HAPPY (late) 30TH BIRTHDAY!!!
I also prefer the sparser purl pattern — I’m excited to see how yours comes out, since only those zillion beads have kept me from knitting Petal. xo

I love that baby sweater! And Petal is so pretty. I think the purl bumps will work well in place of the beads.

  16. stacey - June 18th, 2007 @7:50 am

I’d go with the YP BFL - nice color!!!!

Purl bumps - great alternative to beads - will have to remember that! I was a member of the destash also - the least they could have done was give some kind of warning….not cool.

  17. Amy - June 18th, 2007 @10:17 am

What an adorable baby jacket! And happy birthday indeed to you–I like the purl bumps *much* better than beads. I always love looking at beaded things, but I can’t imagine wearing them.

Happy Birthday! My birthday is June 16th, I’m always excited to find people who have birthdays really close to mine! :) I think that your sock pal would be happy with any of those yarns, they are all lovely.

I had no idea untill today when I checked my emails about this whole destash madness. I’m curious(as i sadly dont have ravelry yet) to see what they come up with.

Oh well, when one blog closes another 5 rush to fill it’s void. Time will tell if these new destash sites garner enough attention to compete with Ravelry.
