Things in spring
Just when I was so over Chart A:
I’m finally finished with A and on to my modified B. I’m pleased with my mods, they look much better than the sloppy swatch. However, my shawl is a bit small. It’s about 12 inches tall, unblocked, and my hasty measurements show that I’m going to gain about 3 inches in height after blocking to make 15 inches total. Chart A takes up more than half of the shawl height and the total height should be about 30 inches, so I’m definitely on the road to knitting a smaller shawl. I didn’t do the called-for gauge swatch in stockinette, but I can only assume that my gauge is way way off.
It’s easy to add pattern repeats, but it makes me sad to rip what I’ve got, especially with all those nupps. Can I just say that working nupps is SO much easier on the pointy Knitpicks needles than Addi’s? I had to use a darning needle to do the p7tog when I made Madli’s Shawl, and that was such a royal pain. There are only 5 stitch nupps in this shawl and I can somewhat easily work them without pointier reinforcements, resulting in much less swearing from camp kelp!

we like no swearing! it is beautiful! were you aiming for a bigger shawl? A smaller one may be more functional - it would be a shame to rip all that pretty knitting out!
It is beautiful.
wow–great modification to that transition. It looks fabulous!
When you are doing the nupps, the purl 5 together…. try this…. slip 2 st purlwise at the same time as if they are one stitch , purl 3 tog (which is way easier than purling 5 tog)then pass the 2 slipped sts over that stitch. For me, this is way easier and looks just the same. I hope it works for you…. Jane
Which Addis are you talking about? Turbos or lace?
oooh, purty! Would be a shame to frog, could you add more repeats of chart B?
oh, it’s too pretty to rip!! If you frog it for the greater good, you might be my new hero.
I say this: just pretend you were intending to make a smaller shawl all along…it’s too beautiful!!
Pretty! I’m surprised about how many people are anti-ripping. If ripping means you’ll end up with the shawl you want, then of course that’s the way to go.
Oh, and I give thanks to the knitting gods every time I pick up my Knit Picks needles. Hooray for pointiness!
P7tog!!! I think that might be why I haven’t knit a shawl yet. I think it’s looking lovely, and hey, there’s nothing wrong with a smaller shawl. I also think I might have to get the Knit Picks needles eventually - I’ve heard so much about how great their points are.
Sorry I missed y’all at SnB last night - all I’m saying is that it’s a mistake to do happy hour BEFORE going to knit night…
this is a beautiful shawl! :)
It’s looking lovely! I’ve recently had good luck with ripping to make something right, but I also like smaller shawls, so I guess I’m no help. :)
Did you use regular addis or the lace ones?
I like the modification you made. It looks more streamlined than the original, I think.
You can always add more repeats of Chart B.
beeeeeautiful!!!
Lovely!
Oh man, good job on those nupps. Swallowtail Shawl by Evelyn Clark is riddled with them, and for the life of my I couldn’t pull it off. You’re doing lovely though. Great pattern!
